Growing up, The Lion King quickly became one of my favorite Disney movies with its catchy songs, heartwarming message, and the magic it brought into this circle of life. Initially I was thrilled with the idea of this story being brought to life (through CGI at least), but with each review I read the more anxious I became. I will admit that the first half of this film felt like a shot for shot remake of the animated film. The thing I love about live action Disney movies is that they add another element to the already encapsulating stories i.e. Cinderella (Kit and Ella meeting before the ball), Beauty and the Beast (the back story of Belle's mother and the new songs), etc. However, The Lion King doesn't and probably couldn't add too much more to this story. I would have loved another song or another element added to the beginning of this film to liven it up with more Disney magic. Once Mufasa dies, which is even more heartbreaking in live action, the story picks up pace and finds ways to freshen up. Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timone and Pumba will keep you laughing from the moment they enter the screen till you leave the theater reflecting on all their hilarious lines. Donald Glover and Beyonce were also perfectly cast in the roles of Simba and Nala, and truthfully each member of the cast did justice to their role, especially Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar who took one of Disney's best villain to the next level. "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" was the most visually stunning moment in the film in my opinion, and there's nothing quite like watching a love story unfold in a beautiful setting while listening to Beyonce and Donald Glover harmonizing. While you may want to take a little nap in the first half of this live action remake, The Lion King is everything us 90's kids have hoped for.
